Associate of Science Degree: The Associate of Science (A.S.) degree in General Studies is the award conferred on students who wish to transfer to an Alabama senior institution and pursue a Bachelor’s Degree (B.S. or B.A.) The Associate’s degree is comprised of five areas (Area I-V) intended to provide the student with a foundation of general education courses in Areas I-IV and more specific courses that provide a base in the pre-major area of study in Area V.
Associate of Applied Science Degree: The Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree is the award conferred on students who wish to complete two years of education at the community college level and then enter the workforce. While many courses taken in an A.A.S. degree program will transfer to an Alabama senior institution, the degree is not designed as a transfer degree.
Certificate: The certificate is the award conferred on students who wish to train or retrain in a specific field or skill and enter or re-enter the workplace with a new or more advanced skill set.
Students requesting to deviate from the published curriculum requirements of their declared major and catalog year must submit a formal request for a course substitution through the appropriate academic approval process. (See Course Substitution Policy.)
Degree Amendment
Once a degree or certificate has been conferred and posted to a student's academic record, it is considered final. Degrees and certificates awarded by Calhoun Community College are official academic credentials, and the College is committed to maintaining the integrity of its academic records, the quality of its educational programs, and the value of its credentials. Accordingly, amendments to a conferred degree or certificate will be considered only in rare and exceptional circumstances. A written request must be sent to graduation@calhoun.edu .
Examples of circumstances that may warrant an amendment include, but are not limited to:
- Correction of an administrative or clerical error that resulted in the incorrect award of a degree or certificate.
- Revocation or correction of a credential awarded in error.
- Changes resulting from the resolution of a grade appeal, academic grievance, or other official institutional review that directly affects degree or certificate eligibility.
- Other extraordinary circumstances as determined by the Vice President for Academic Affairs or designee.
Requests to amend a conferred degree or certificate will not be approved solely to improve a student's academic record, cumulative GPA, or eligibility for admission to another educational institution or for employment. All requests will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis in accordance with College policy and applicable Alabama Community College System regulations. All requests must be submitted to graduation@calhoun.edu
